Craving BUTTERMILK PANCAKES in Hong Kong...

I really miss home made buttermilk panckes and scones but Its almost impossible to find fresh buttermilk in Hong Kong, or even the rest of Asia.  But fortunately I just received this useful tip from a reader... For substitute buttermilk, with each cup of fresh milk add 1 tbsp of lemon juice and let the mixture stand for 5 minutes. Buttermilk is essentially partially curdled milk so the lemon juice does the trick!

Also here is a good buttermilk pancake recipe:

http://allrecipes.com/recipe/buttermilk-pancakes-ii/

Actually I find this particular recipe site very useful as it has videos for many of their recipes and techniques. I've had my helper watch the videos from time to time. Its much more effective than just learning from a cook book or written recipes. The site is from the US so I lot of the western and Latino recipes are quite good but I'm not so keen on their Asian recipes.

Hong Kong baking supplies home delivery service... BAKING WAREHOUSE

BAKING WAREHOUSE is another resonably priced baking ingredients supplier (unlike the pricey Olivers and Three Sixty!!)  in Hong Kong.  The other good bake supplier that I know of is I lOVE CAKE. Please see my earlier post on them.  Unlike I LOVE CAKE, BAKING WAREHOUSE is a home delivery service which stocks notoriously hard to find items such as gelantine sheets, cocoa butter, nautral madagascar bourbon vanilla bean paste, oreo crumbs for pie crusts, and cornmeal... how wonderful!

However they dont seem to carry any buttermilk which I have yet to find n Hong Kong.  If anyone knows where to find this elusive milk pleae let me know at adelinema2009@gmail.com

Check out :

The minimum order is HK$500 and delivery is offered throughout Hong Kong

Budget garden marquee in Hong Kong for weddings, and other celebrations

The United Services Recreation Club, is a private members ‘club tucked away in a green belt near Tsim Sha Tsui/Jordan and must be one of Hong Kong’s best kept secrets!

The USRC was established in 1911 for British military officers. And like most military enclaves, it was blessed with an abundance of that rarest Hong Kong attribute: space. With the British forces long gone, the club has switched to civilian mode but made the sensible decision to keep numbers in check to allow members to enjoy all that greenery. The club has restaurants, tennis and squash facilities, a particularly fine bowling green, plus three old-style swimming pools and a playground. A new addition is a garden marquee and terrace that can accommodate up to 300 guests and is a charming venue for wedding receptions, corporate events and other celebrations.  Outdoor venues are rare in this town and the minimum charge for this space is a fraction of the cost of better hotels. Actually with the money save you can splurge on the honeymoon!  Booking the marquee requires a minimum food and beverage spend of HK$50,000 plus 10% service charge for non club members.

Liquidation of solid wood Chinese reproduction antique furniture....items are priced to move!!

This is Part 2 of the home furniture liquidation that I posted back in July. The lot that started selling in July is nearly sold out

But this time they have just shipped in a lot of Chinese reproduction antiques from another warehouse.

I heard that the company just changed its strategy on entering the home furnishing business and just want to liquidate all of its stock at bargain prices. Prices start at HK$300 for side tables, HK$800 + cabinets and consoles.

They also have leather trays, ceramics vases and floor lamps starting from $50 each.

Given the low prices, buyers must arrange their own pick up of purchases and payment must be in cash.

Please contact Josephine to arrange a time to visit their warehouse in Aberdeen. She is very helpful but you will need to arrange your own van/trunk service to pick up the purchases. Please check with Josephine if their are certain items that you are looking for.

Please contact me if you want referrals for reasonably priced van/truck movers at adelinema2009@gmail.com

Good Ordinary White is the perfect counterpart to Berrys’ perenially popular Good Ordinary Claret. Come home to a clean home and hot meal on the table every evening! SUPERHELPER.ORG

http://www.superhelper.org/

I just love this service ! Its a must for anyone hiring a full time helper, especially that that hasnt been properly trained before. I'm way too busy with my businesses and honestly housecleaning and cooking arent my talents anyway...

Super helper provides household management and cooking training for domestic helpers at their venue in Repulse Bay.  The instritute is run by Marilyn Santiago-Kerr who is Danish-Filippio and an advid cook herself.

When I sponsored my helper, Malou from the Phillippines a few years ago I sent her straight to Super helper's 2 day traning sessions for HK$980. It was money well spent because Malou came back knowing how to germ proof the home, handle household emgencies, western and chinese table settings, and how to save money on household cleaners, and equipment.   This must be the most useful course for any helper.

We also enrolled Malou in their cooking classes. I highly recommend this for their Western cooking where they will teach everything from basics like soup making, salad and vinaigrettes, sauces and more complex creations like roasts, pastries, and souffles.  Students are taught how to prepare a full menu during each lesson.

Please check out
http://www.superhelper.org/western_cooking_schedule.html

Lessons in Asian cooking (Thai and Japanese)  are also available but for Chinese cooking I recommend sending your helper to Towngas http://www.towngascooking.com/eng/course/course.asp which has a 6 week training course for helpers.

I'm happy to say that we are eating healthy, balanced and delicious meals at home all the time now!
